Lido is an 11-kilometre long sandbar island that protects Venice from the open sea. Thomas Mann’s 1912 novel “A Death in Venice” was set here, but the ambience of the island today is more laid-back than dramatic. In summer, Lido begins to swell with tourists, paparazzi, and movie stars, and gets ready for the Venice Film Festival, one of Italy’s major events of the year. For those who love a challenge, the other end of the island offers Venice’s only chance to swing a club. The Lido Golf Club course is technically difficult, so bring your handicap.

The Marco Polo Airport in Venice offers transfers via Alilaguna private boats to Lido, or, if you’re flying from somewhere close, Lido has its own 1,000-metre airstrip. From the city itself, there’s a Vaporetto boat service that runs to the island. Lido is one of the only islands with road transportation. Buses and taxis run from one end of the island to the other, or hire a bicycle from a local vendor if you’d like to see the sights at your leisure. The beach is accessible via the boat dock, and is a pleasant walk.
