Campaniledi San Marco
The Campanile di San Marco is a 97-metre tall bell tower located in Venice’s renowned St. Mark’s Square. The reddish brick structure was originally built as a lighthouse for vessels that were navigating the Venetian Lagoon for business as well as pleasure. The tower had to be rebuilt several times after it was damaged by several fires and an earthquake. The latest, most durable version was put up in 1912 after the Campanile di San Marco cracked and collapsed in 1902. Amazingly, nobody was seriously injured in that fantastic fall. A golden statue of Angel Gabriel sits atop this landmark of Venice, making it both an easily appreciated and essential part of greater Venice.
- Take an elevator to the top and gaze down on St. Mark’s Square, the winding canals of Venice, surrounding islands, and maybe the distant Dolomite Mountains.
- Get a different perspective of the tower from a comfy chair at one of St. Mark’s Square’s outdoor cafes and enjoy a cup of espresso.
- Visit the Clock Tower just across from the Campaniledi San Marco where you can book a fascinating tour to see the inner mechanisms of this astronomical clock.
