Bridge of Sighs
The white limestone Bridge of Sighs passes over the Rio di Palazzo and is the most famous bridge in all of Venice, Italy. The bridge has an interesting history that began in 1602 from a design by Antoni Contino. The ancient bridge once connected prison cells to the interrogation room of Doge’s Palace, making the view from the Bridge of Sighs the last thing criminals saw before lockdown. The moniker was given by Lord Byron, who imagined the prisoner’s sighing as they took their last glimpse of beautiful Venice.
- Take your lover on a gondola ride beneath Venice’s famous Bridge of Sighs and kiss him or her at sunset; according to local legend, doing so will bring you both eternal bliss.

- Take a scenic canal tour that passes beneath many famous bridges, including the Bridge of Sighs, while flanked by the many historic sites and beautiful architecture of Venice.
One of the most romantic ways to visit the Bridge of Sighs, as well as the rest of the city centre of Venice, is by gondola tours that weave through the dense network of canals that snake through the city. The small, traffic-free streets that line the canals are perfect for leisurely strolls. The small vaporetti boats leave from the main train station and offer a faster, cheaper way to navigate the canals. From the Marco Polo Airport in Venice you may take waterbuses to get to the city centre.
