Basilica di San Marco
Of the many historic churches located in Venice, Italy, the Basilica di San Marco may be the most famous and represents one of the world’s finest examples of Byzantine architecture. Situated on the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, the spectacular cathedral is connected to Doge’s Palace. Construction of Basilica di San Marco began in the 9th century and continued into the 16th century as the exterior was further decorated and ornately adorned. The exterior of the cathedral is lavishly designed and decorated with an array of columns, mosaics and Romanesque art.
- Explore the Basilica di San Marco Museum, where you can see the restored 13th century Horses of Saint Mark that were once stolen by Napoleon and later returned to Venice in 1815.
- Visit the upper corridor of Basilica di San Marco and admire the spectacular mosaics covering the interior. The massive 8,000 square metre mosaic contains gold, bronze and a colourful variety of precious stones from around Venice.
- Walk around the exterior and check out the strange statue of The Tetrarchs which is made from porphyry rock and has adorned the Basilica since the early 13th century.
The Marco Polo International Airport is the main gateway to Venice and it is well connected to the city. From the airport you can take one of the Water Buses that go directly to the city centre. The city is connected by a vast network of canals that are the best way to get around the city. Most Venetians travel by small vaporetto boats that are cheap and fast and there is a stop for the Basilica di San Marco aptly named San Marco. The streets along the Grand Canal are safe for pedestrians and are perfect for long walks.
