As the smallest independent state in the entire world the Vatican City is a truly remarkable place to visit, with some of the most famous sights all situated within such a short area. Established in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty, the place offers so many sightseeing opportunities that, despite its size you probably need 2 full days to take everything in. The Vatican is an ecclesiastical city-state ruled by the Pope, the pontiff of Rome. The Vatican Gardens take up around 50% of the territory and contain wonderful sculptures and sprawling fountains.
- Climb to the top of the Basilica for some of the best views of not just the Vatican City but also the whole of Rome.
- Browse around the statues of St Peter's Square whilst snapping away with your camera at the magnificent Cathedral of the Vatican.
- Marvel at the staggering work of Michelangelo and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel an absolute must for any trip to Rome.
As the Vatican City is basically just one square and several walkways, everything can be achieved on foot. Actually arriving there is simple enough with good connecting rail networks and bus routes. As one of the most visited cities in Europe, Rome has 2 airports serving its needs, which are the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino and Ciampino, bringing in tourist from around the world to view the attractions of this incredible little territory. As with any large city, if one is taking a taxi it is best to have exact change as Rome’s taxi drivers are notorious for fleecing hapless visitors.
