Sitting just south of Vatican City on the west bank of the Tiber River, the Trastevere area is in the rione (district) XIII of Rome. When walking through the narrow, cobblestone streets between medieval houses, keep an eye out for the district crest, a golden lion’s head on a red background. Don’t be surprised while wandering the atmospheric streets of Trastevere if you run across artists, famous people, or foreign expatriates. Both natives and tourists swarm Trastevere at night to sample its pubs and restaurants. The area also houses the American Academy in Rome, and several architectural schools from around the world.
- Honour the director of those great spaghetti westerns, Sergio Leone, by visiting the marble plaque in the Viale Glorioso apartment building where he grew up.
- Admire the historic mosaics in one of the oldest churches in Rome: the Santa Maria in Trastevere, which may have been founded as long ago as 222, although the current building dates form the 12th century.
- Touch and smell more than 3500 species of plants at the Orto Botanico (botanical gardens) at the northwest edge of Trastevere.
Trastevere is one of the major tourist centres in Rome. You can get there from the Leonardo da Vinci airport or other areas of the city in many ways. If you are not a resident of the district, you will not be permitted to park after dark, so you will have to park in one of the closer regions and walk. Parking can also be a problem on weekends or warm evenings: you may be better off coming to the Trastevere district by bus or tram. Tram number 8 runs frequently from the Piazza Argentina near the Pantheon.
