The district of Portuense in Rome gets its name from Via Portuense. The saying goes that “all roads lead to Rome,” and Via Portuense was one of these ancient Roman roads. The ancient road led from the city to the harbour of Portus built by Emperor Claudius at the mouth of the Tiber River, and today it leads to Fiumicino Airport. The district itself is quiet and largely residential, populated with locals and local restaurants, cafes, and wine bars. It is nestled along the banks of the Tiber River, just south of the romantic and lively Trastevere district.
- Visit the historic sites in this part of Rome, including old churches and the SPQR way marker and memorial at Via Ettore Rolli on the wall underneath the railroad tracks.
- Walk along Viale Guglielmo Marconi, which has a few smatterings of small shops and quaint restaurants and cafes, or wander around the alleyways to find a local gem.
The Portuense is well served by trams, and the Roma Trastevere railway station is located at the northern edge of the district, whilst the Villa Bonelli railway station is south. Bus #23, 44, 170, 280, and 781 also stop in the district. Portuense is conveniently situated between the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport to the east and the Vatican and the city of Rome to the north. The district of Trastevere lies just to the north, and the gastronomic neighbourhoods of Aventino and Testaccio are to the north-east.
