Piazza del Popolo
The Piazza del Popolo is a public square in Rome that was once the main gateway to the ancient city. The piazza is situated inside of the northern gate in the Aurelian Walls and at one time was the terminus of the most important northern route. The piazza was designed in the 19th century by Giuseppe Valadier, who reconfigured the original 16th century plaza to add more dimensions. He removed insignificant buildings, adding sculpture and surrounding it with trees. Now the square is a beautiful public meeting place and a great spot to watch the people the world stroll by.
- Go to the southern end of Piazza del Popolo where you will find the Santa Maria dei Miracoli and the Santa Maria in Montesanto, two 17th century symmetrical churches that were commissioned by pope Alexander VII.
- Admire the obelisk at the piazza’s centre that was moved from Rome’s famous Circus Maximus in the 16th century and originally built in 1300 BC.
- Throw a coin into the central fountain of the Piazza del Popolo, a popular spot for the people of Rome to congregate and make wishes.
The Piazza del Popolo is one of the most popular meeting places in Rome, so you are likely to go there at some point on your trip. You can get there by public transportation by using the metro and getting off at the Flaminio station that is just a short walk away. The area that surrounds the Piazza del Popolo is full of interesting things to look at, so a great way to explore is to walk from the piazza down Via del Corso to Piazza Venezia, while enjoying the scenery along the way.
