The present-day neighbourhood of Aventino occupies a hefty portion on one of the seven hills along the Tiber River which comprised the ancient city of Rome. Remnants of the legendary civilization form an integral part of the district’s attractions. Among the picturesque and affluent residential spaces scattered about Aventino, visitors can discover historic basilicas and churches that reveal some of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding city. Parks freckle the area, issuing an irresistible invitation for an afternoon picnic. The nearby district of Testaccio offers unique markets, tombs and museums for further exploration.
- Visit the Circus Maximus, scene of Emperor Nero’s infamous fiddling during the burning of Rome at this ancient Aventino chariot racing stadium which held over 300,000 spectators in the days of its glory.
- View the medieval architecture and experience the legend of the Classical-era Mouth of Truth statue at the Church of Santa Maria, mythicised throughout Aventino as having special powers.
- Isola Tiberna is a historic Tiber island, connected to Rome by bridges from 46 BC and the Middle Ages, and the sacred site of medicinal ritual at the Temple of Aesculapius.
Aventino is located to the south of downtown Rome, on the eastern bank of the Tiber River. The district falls into a nook between several train stations, which diverge from the all-important Roma Termini just off Via Marsala. Train route 4 makes two other stops in the south end of Aventino, at Roma Tuscalona and Roma Ostiense stations. Subway route B traverses the neighbourhood through its centre, stopping at Piramide and Circo Massimo stations. This subway also stops at the famous Coliseum north of town. Tram line 3 makes frequent stops along the east-west Via Marmorata and north-south Viale Aventino.
