Ara Pacis hotels
The Ara Pacis is one of the longest surviving monuments from the early days of Rome. Originally dedicated to the Roman goddess of peace, this altar is over 2,000 years old, having been completed in 9 B.C. Whilst the altar depicts several scenes from early Roman life, the overall theme of the piece is sacrificial worship to several of the Roman gods, most of which are led by members of the Emperor’s family. In modern times, the Ara Pacis has been preserved in its own museum, which was designed in 2006.
- View the intricate carvings on the sides of the Ara Pacis that depict a procession of royal family members on their way to a ritual sacrifice.
- Tour the adjacent museum, which contains artefacts from the early Empire of Rome, as well as exhibits portraying the restoration of the Ara Pacis monument.
- Browse the books in the museum’s bookstore or have a meal at one of the Rome restaurants located nearby the facility.
Getting to Ara Pacis is fairly simple for visitors who are arriving by air. Two airports service Rome: the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport and the Rome-Ciampino International Airport. From both airports guests can take public transportation to the city centre. At Leonardo da Vinci, visitors can use the Leonardo Express train or the Metropolitan train, whilst Ciampino offers transport on the Sit or Terravision bus shuttles. To reach Ara Pacis, tourists can take line A of the Metro underground, exiting at Flaminio station.
