Cimitero Monumentale hotels
The Cimitero Monumentale is a very popular attraction in Milan. While a cemetery may not seem all that interesting to visitors, the Cimitero Monumentale is decidedly different. The tombs inside this cemetery offer a fascinating inside look at the unique artistic style that Italian sculptors developed during the late 19th century. Glancing through the names on the tombs gives visitors an idea of the upper echelon in ancient Milan. This incredible cemetery was designed by the famous artist Carlo Maciachini, and first opened in 1866. Now, it has become one of the biggest and most important cemeteries in Italy.
- Take a closer look at the Greek temples and obelisks that decorate the tombs, and read about the very specific Milan artistic style in which the tombs were built.
- Pay attention to the smaller version of Trajan's Column; although this is a miniature version, it still stands out in glorious splendour.
- Examine the Famedio, the large main entrance of the Cimitero Monumentale, which is a neo-medieval style building made out of marble and stone; this edifice contains the most impressive tombs honouring the most prominent citizens of Milan.
Visitors travelling to the Cimitero Monumentale from the airport should take either the shuttle or the train to the central train station of Milan. By bus, it will take about 50 minutes, whereas the train takes closer to half an hour. From the train station, take the train to F.S. Garibaldi or the subway, green line M2, and get off at station Garibaldi. Travellers who prefer to use the tram can take lines 2, 4, 7, 12 and 14.
