Medici Chapels (Cappelle Medicee) hotels
Florence's Medici Chapels are rich with history and artwork. Dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, the Medici Chapels are located in the Basilica of San Lorenzo. The exterior of San Lorenzo is relatively nondescript, which belies the exquisite décor and masterpieces housed inside. The Medici Chapels are comprised of the Sagrestia Nuova (New Sacristy), which was built first by the architect Matteo Nigetti, and the Cappella dei Principi (Chapel of the Princes), which is the larger of the two and built by Michelangelo, and house the tombs of the members of the wealthy and influential Medici family.
- Take a look at the richly ornate décor of the Cappella dei Principi and its immense cupola to see one of the few examples of Baroque-style architecture in Florence.
- Walk around the Sagrestia Nuovo and admire the marble sculptures created by Michelangelo, including the statues of Night and Day, statues of Dawn and Dusk, and Madonna with Child.
- Stroll through the cavernous crypt to see the imposing tombs of the lesser members of the Medici family and the exhibits of notable religious relics in Florence.
The Medici Chapels are part of the Basilica of San Lorenzo complex, which is quite large and centrally located in Florence. The chapels are accessed through the back of the church. If taking public transport, bus stops Unita Italiana/Farmacia Della Stazion (bus lines 5, 11, 22, C2) and Pucci (bus lines 14, 23, C1) are closest. However, Florence is easy to navigate on foot, especially the historic city centre. The Duomo, Giardino Di Valfonda, and other popular attractions are in easy walking distance of the Medici Chapels. The Basilica of San Lorenzo is also a popular stop on the itinerary of many sightseeing tours.
