The Bari Rundown

The city of Bari on Italy’s eastern coast is awash with old world charm, and visitors to this medieval gateway to the Adriatic will be fascinated by its long and eventful history as a key seaport dating back to the 4th century BC. The magnificent Basilica of Saint Nicholaslies to the north of the city in the medieval quarter, which is itself a major attraction in this ancient part of the world. The nearby Teatro Petruzzelli has recently been restored to its former glory, and once again rests as the cultural and entertainment hub of the city.

The modern section of Bari hosts a plethora of designer clothes stores, gift and souvenir shops, and many restaurants specializing in local cuisine. For nightlife, the medieval quarter has a good range of bars and clubs that are open all hours. Bari has several milongas (tango dance clubs) if you’re keen to dance the tango, For a dose of the culturally historic, the Palazzo della Provinciahouses the Provincial Art Gallerywhich displays works dating back to the 11th century AD. Bari’s temperate climate, stunning architecture and friendly locals are a refreshing and exotic backdrop for your next family holiday.

Getting There

Karol Wojtyla International Airportis 8 km (5 miles) from the town centre. Two bus services run from the airport: Amtab(slower but less expensive) and Tempesta (runs more frequently and goes directly to the city centre). Both run services around the city, and Tempesta offers day tours and private charters.

For extended stays, rent a car, as there is little public transportation available to regional areas. Taxi or public transportation is a better option if you’re staying in the city, as parking can be difficult.

Regular ferry services are available to many destinations around the Adriatic coast. The rail network in Bari connects to many Italian cities with daily service.
