Dome of the Rock hotels
Dome of the Rock
The Dome of the Rock is one of the most easily recognizable and oft-visited tourist destinations in the city of Jerusalem. Topped by its signature gold dome, the Islamic shrine was built in the late 7th century by a wealthy Muslim caliph. Despite its purpose as an Islamic religious site, the Dome of the Rock has significance for Christians and Jews as well, due to its appearance in religious traditions and rites. The rich history of the shrine including its significance as the site of a miracle, makes it a frequent pilgrimage destination for people from all over the world.
- See the Foundation Stone, the 12 by 15-metre rock that the Dome of the Rock is built around, and learn about its history in both Islamic and Jewish tradition.
- Visit the Well of Souls, the Bir el-Arwah, by taking the stairs to the cave under the Foundation Stone, where some claim the voices of the dead can be heard as they descend below Jerusalem.
- Read the founding inscription engraved around the Dome of the Rock, which credits the construction to Caliph al-Mamun and contains quotations from the Qur’an.
Ben Gurion International Airport is the largest air terminal in Jerusalem and provides air service from several countries. International travellers who are visiting the Dome of the Rock can fly into the airport and then take a Nesher minibus to the city or hire a private taxi for a higher rate. Within the city, getting around is available by taxicab, bus, or light rail. Getting to the Dome of the Rock, though, may require a bit of walking, since non-Muslim guests must enter the site from a specific port of entry.
