Portlaoise General Information
In the Irish Midlands, you will find an appealing little county town, where only a short distance from Portlaoise hotels are Celtic castles, mountains and medieval castles and towers to explore. Beginning life as a fort in the 16th century, Portlaoise has seen its fair share of conflict with the English over the centuries, as has much of the neighbouring county. Only 10 kilometres north from the town, you can explore the historic Rock of Dunamase, and ramble though the substantial ruins of a 13th-century Celtic castle. A little farther afield are the beautiful Slieve Bloom Mountains, where crystal-clear mountain streams tumble through ridges and forested valleys. Well-defined walking trails provide spectacular views of the scenery for hikers, and the autumn colours are breathtaking.
After a day of sightseeing and exertion in the countryside, put your feet up and relax back at your Portlaoise accommodation. Next day, if Guinness is good for you, plan to head north for a change, to Dublin to Guinness Storehouse; enjoy a pint while learning about the history. Take advantage of your free HotelClub membership with member benefits, including upgrades, breakfast, Wi-Fi and more. While you are here, have a game of golf at the Portlaoise Golf Course, check out the shops and take a stroll through the local museums.
Regular trains and buses from Dublin and Cork service the town. Self-drive is the most popular choice for visitors to this area, and Portlaoise hotels are easily accessed by several national roadways linking Dublin, Limerick and Cork.
