The General Post Office is not just a building where Dublin residents receive their mail. This building is an iconic institution and honoured landmark representing Irish nationalism, as it was the site where the leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916 established their headquarters. The original Proclamation of the Irish Republic is exhibited at the An Post Museum inside the General Post Office, where visitors may admire sculptures such as Cúchulainn by Oliver Shepherd and the Fidelity, Hibernia, and Mercury statues created by John Smyth. The GPO enjoys an excellent location near many of the city's most important landmarks.

The General Post Office is just eleven kilometres from the Dublin Airport using the R108 highway, where the AirCoach express and Dublin Bus Airlink buses provide inexpensive ground transportation. There are also taxis, which may be comparable to the bus or metro when you split the fare with other passengers. If you are not flying, you can get to town by coach bus, ferry or train, and there are Park and Ride lots for drivers who want to avoid the city centre traffic. O'Connell Street buses and the Abbey Street tram serve the General Post Office, which is also pedestrian-friendly.
