Kylemore Abbey hotels
Located in the heart of Connemara in County Galway, Kylemore Abbey is considered to be Ireland’s most romantic castle. Established on historic castle grounds for Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium in World War I in 1920, Kylemore Abbey is more than just a castle in an idyllic setting. Gardeners will be entranced by the six-acre Victorian walled garden, while photographers will find plenty of opportunities to capture the stunning architecture and historical buildings of the complex. A nearby Gothic church and the beautiful surrounding countryside make the Abbey a day-long destination.
- Explore Kylemore Abbey’s five beautifully restored rooms, from the entrance halls, drawing room, community room, and dining room to the rear hall, which reflect life in Ireland in the mid 1800s.
- Stroll the vast grounds of Connemara’s only garden built in a bog and one of the last Victorian walled gardens to be constructed, located west of the Abbey and featuring landscaped settings, greenhouses, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Take in a cosy concert at the Gothic-style church, which provides nearly perfect acoustics for the Connemara choral and small musical groups that regularly perform here.
Kylemore Abbey is an easy day trip from several cities in Ireland. The town of Connemara is a short train ride from Galway and Westport, both of which are accessible from Dublin. By car, visitors take the N59, turn right onto the R344 just past Recess, and follow signs to Kylemore Abbey. Regional bus service is also available from Galway into Connemara. A variety of tour operators offer day trips to the Abbey and the surrounding countryside. The Ireland West Airport at Nock and the South Shannon Airport connect the area with destinations throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.
