Sangiran is an archaeological excavation and World Heritage Site located in the Solo River valley on the island of Java, Indonesia. The site was unearthed by German anthropologist Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald in 1934, and he quickly realized that he had found something special. Sangiran is about 48 square kilometres big and contains fossils of some of the most ancient human ancestors ever discovered, giving it the title of “Sangiran Early Man Site.” In addition, many fossils of other animals were found, making this one of the most important anthropological discoveries of the 20th century.
