An important icon of modern Indonesian culture, the National Museum in Jakarta was established in the late 18th century by Dutch intellectuals and is now one of the most treasured museums in southeast Asia. There is no better place to discover every last inch of Indonesian natural history and almost all of its human history than this impressive institution, which houses an incredible amount of over 60 thousand artefacts. From the earliest prehistoric finds to explorations of social and economic developments, the National Museum is always one of the premier destinations for visitors and curious locals in Jakarta.
- Treasure Rooms: Stand in awe of the National Museum’s archaeological collections, including the magnificent statue of Prajnaparamita, the Buddhist deity of transcendent wisdom, Balinese kris weapons, and royal golden ornaments.
- Stone Sculpture Collection: Discover some of the most prized sculptures in Jakarta and southeast Asia, which mostly depict Hindu and Buddhist influences in artistic movements and cultural development.
- Ceramic Collection: Understand the history of Indonesian maritime trade around Jakarta, the early connections to China in the Han Dynasty, and the impact of Indian civilization on Indonesian cultures through the collection and stories of ceramic artefacts.
