Istana Negara hotels
Istana Negara, the State Palace, is one of the most important governmental buildings in Jakarta, having served as a residence for several notable officials over the years. Originally constructed as a private home for a Dutch entrepreneur in the late 1700s, the palace was converted to a government property and it served as an administration building until the construction of Merdeka Palace. Today, visitors who tour the city can walk by Istana Negara and see both the State Palace and Merdeka Palace, as well as the other royal government buildings in the same complex.
- Walk through the National Monument Park, just next to Istana Negara, to get a close look at the city’s enormous monument to its independence from Japan.
- Take a walking tour of the neighbourhood around Istana Negara and get a look at other high-profile buildings in Jakarta, including Merdeka Palace and the Istiqal Mosque.
- Visit the National Museum of Indonesia, located in Jakarta, to learn more about the history of the state palace and its role in the country’s government over the years.
To travel to Jakarta by air, visitors need to arrive at Soekarno Hatta International Airport, the major airport in the area. Reaching the downtown city centre is also simple, since passengers can take the local DAMRI shuttle bus from the airport to many major attractions. Reaching Istana Negara is possible by using the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit system, which operates an underground train throughout the city. The closest transit station to Istana Negara is Dhoby Ghaut, which is located at the entrance to Istana Park across from the palace.
