Nestled in the heart of Bali is the small town of Ubud, which is considered the cultural centre of Bali. Ubud, whose name is derived from the Balinese word for medicine, was first known as a source of medicinal plants and herbs. The town is now full of artists’ shops and galleries, and there are plenty of architectural delights to be enjoyed as well. Though it appears to be one town, Ubud actually consists of fourteen different small villages. Overall, the climate, culture, and atmosphere of the town make it a welcoming, serene place to be.
- Visit the village of Bedulu to see the 9th century Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), a significant Hindu and archaeological site in Bali.
- Dine at the restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah hotel and enjoy the views of Ubud's lush rice paddies and the rain forest just beyond the rice paddies.
- Have lunch at a local cafe in JI Monkey Forest after a day of touring the neighbourhood’s art galleries in Bali.
The island is served by Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport. Bemos go to Ubud from Bali's capital city of Denpasar, and the journey takes about an hour. You can also take a taxi there, though it is best to charter the taxi for the day to avoid the 30% surcharge for travelling outside of the town. Perama bus line also offer daily bus trips to Ubud. Your hotel might offer complementary transport services to the town, and cars are available for hire at various car hire services around the airport.
