No trip to Reykjavik would be complete without a stroll down Laugavegur, the city’s oldest shopping street and a major commercial hub. Laugavegur is located in the centre of downtown Reykjavik and is home to a lively variety of shops selling clothing, crafts, jewellery, and art. This busy road also hosts a variety of street performances and public art. Tourists interested in architecture will also find many historic homes and buildings along this luxurious street. Finally, many of the city’s best restaurants and bars are located on this thoroughfare, providing tourists and locals alike with a variety of culinary choices.
- Take a leisurely stroll down the length of luxurious Laugavegur street, taking in the chic shops, art studios, and restaurants, as well as the nearby, scenic harbour and must-see Reykjavik City Hall.
- Join the crowd on a Saturday night for a fabulous Reykjavik pub crawl – plan to start anytime after 11:30 p.m.
- Visit the must-see Icelandic Phallological Museum, located right on Laugavegur, for a unique museum experience that you won't soon forget.
Iceland’s fabulous capital city is served by the Reykjavik bus service, with buses serving most stops every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends or evenings. Bus stops along Laugavegur include Gamla sjónvarpshúsið, Hátún, Fíladelfía, and Þjóðsk.safnið. Additionally, any taxi driver in the city will be able to take you to this popular location. Travellers entering the Reykjavik city centre from the Keflavík International Airport will need to travel 48 kilometres northeast to reach Laugavegur.
