One of the world’s oddest and most architecturally interesting churches, the Hallgrímskirkja is a working Lutheran parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland, that is the city’s tallest structure at 74.5 metres. Named after the author of the Passion Hymns, Hallgrímur Pétursson, the church, which took 38 years to build, was completed in 1974. Located in the city centre, Hallgrímskirkja is visible throughout the beautiful Scandinavian city. The church’s architecture is supposed to represent the volcanic basalt rock formations that make up much of Iceland’s rare and peculiar terrain.
- Walk up or take a lift to the church’s observation tower to see a spectacular view of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountainous area.
- Don’t miss Hallgrímskirkja’s massive pipe organ that is 15 metres tall, weighs 25 tons, and has four manuals, 102 ranks, 72 stops, and no less than 5275 pipes.
- Commemorate explorer Leif Erickson, who discovered Iceland and North America 500 years before Columbus set foot in the New World, with a visit to his statue directly in front of the church in Reykjavík.
Reykjavík has a minimal bus system and no light rail or subway system. However, public bus transportation is available to Hallgrímskirkja through the Landspítal inn stop near the Landspítali Hospital and the University of Iceland. Buses are operated by Strætóbs and run at approximate 30-minute intervals. International visitors can reach Hallgrímskirkja through Keflavík International Airport, located 50 km to the southwest of the capital along the coast, with flights to seven destinations in the United States, two in Canada, and 30 cities throughout Europe. Transportation between the airport and the city is best via car or through Iceland Excursions' Airport Express or Reykjavik Excursions Kynnisferðir's Flybus services.
