Szeged General Information

As the third most populous city in Hungary behind Budapest and Debrecen, Szeged has a lot to offer visitors to the superlative country in Central Europe. The presence of the University of Szeged, the top academic institution in Hungary, and a profusion of magnificent attractions makes the city a pre-eminent tourist hub.

The area of modern-day Szeged has a settlement legacy that pre-dates the Romans. Throughout the city’s long and complex history, the list of invaders and occupiers includes everyone from the Huns to the Mongols, Ottoman Turks to the Hapsburgs. For many first-time visitors to Szeged, what amounts to a tidy urban plan of wide boulevards seems strangely uncommon for the Southern Great Plain region of Hungary. The explanation for Szeged’s handsome layout comes courtesy of a ruinous flood in 1879 and a subsequent promise by then Emperor Franz Joseph I to rebuild the city better than ever. Contemporary visitors may conclude that the King of Hungary was good on his word. Szeged has a number of architectural gems, such as the Church of Grey Friars, Votive Church of Our Lady of Hungary, Szeged Synagogue and the National Theatre.
