SoHo is an up-and-coming neighbourhood located in the central part of Hong Kong Island. Its name comes from its being situated South of Hollywood Road. Its most distinctive feature is the Central-Mid-Levels escalator, which traverses very steep terrain to connect two other neighbourhoods. That escalator was the longest in the world when it was built in 1993. Today there are lots of shops located just off the escalator. SoHo has taken a turn towards the hip, with the opening of several trendy restaurants and bars. It is one of Hong Kong Island’s more lively and modern areas.
- Dine out at one of SoHo’s happening restaurant spots, where you can indulge in Portuguese, French, Nepalese, Italian, and Indian cuisine, just to name a few.
- Ride one of Hong Kong Island’s most curious transports, the Central-Mid-Levels escalator, which connects the Central and Western Districts by way an 800-metre long covered escalator, and offers fascinating glimpses of cityscapes.
- Visit the Hong Kong Island’s Man Mo Temple, located in SoHo, which dates to 1847 and has an altar surrounded by intricate and wondrous depictions of the god of war Mo.
Hong Kong Island is served by the Chek Lap Kok (Hong Kong International) Airport, which accommodates domestic and international flights. Transport from the airport to the city is available via train, shuttle bus, and taxicab. It is also possible to get from mainland China to Hong Kong Island by a combination of vehicle and boat. The city’s excellent public transport system consists of metro underground, ferry, train, bus, and taxicab. SoHo is well connected to the system, as the metro Central Station is located just at its edge. The Central-Mid-Level escalator bisects SoHo, offering some relief from the city’s hills.
