Rothenburg General Information

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (or “Red fortress above the Tauber river”) is a prototype of what makes Germany such a dramatic and wonderful country to discover as a tourist with a bad, acute case of wanderlust. The pristine medieval hamlet in Bavaria, and former Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire for over 500 years, is a must-see side trip from the likes of Würzburg, Nürnberg, Augsburg, Ansbach, Munich and Stuutgart.

Rothenburg sits in the lush Franconia area of Bavaria, with the bucolic Naturpark Frankenhöhe as a backdrop. Home to a small populace of just over 11,000 people, the town’s fairy tale-like layout is a perpetual tourist target throughout the year. Of the inordinate landmarks in Rothenburg, the best of the best includes the handsome Market Square, macabre Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum, elegant Town Hall, ancient medieval gates and walls, and the Church of Saint Jacob. In typical Bavaria style, Rothenburg transforms into a festive Christmas market every December, with a cornucopia of seasonal goods and copious merriment on hand. Other worthwhile events in the superb town include the Taubertal Festival, Medieval Festival and Meistertrunk Festival.
