Stachus is a large public square situated in the heart of Munich, Germany. The square was once named Karlsplatz after Charles Theodore, but he became so unpopular that the locals simply started referring to the square as Stachus after a beloved nearby pub. Stachus features a number of interesting historical structures, some dating back to the 14th century. Stachus is a major travel hub in Munich and is also a popular meeting place for locals. With plenty of shopping, restaurants, and occasional live musical performances, Stachus is a great place to spend an afternoon.
- Visit Munich in the winter when an open-air ice rink is opened at Stachus; this is a great way to enjoy a crisp winter day whilst gliding around the ice.
- Enjoy the large shopping centre located beneath Stachus, where guests will find a great selection of popular Munich retailers alongside specialty shops offering unique souvenirs.
- Marvel at the Munich Karlstor, a restored gothic gate on the east side of Stachus that was once part of a medieval fortification.
Munich's efficient public transportation system makes exploring the city both fun and easy. As a major transportation hub in Munich, Stachus is easily accessible via the underground rail system or local train, as both have a station beneath the square. Stachus is also a hub for the tram, and there is a four-track station located just a few steps away from the square. Once there, guests should take the time to explore the entire square on foot. This is the best way to admire the many interesting buildings, stores, and restaurants within historic Stachus.
