The Odeonsplatz is a large public square that is situated at the heart of Munich, Germany. Odeonsplatz has an interesting and rich history that began in 1816 when King Ludwig I commissioned the square using a design from Leo von Klenze. Many of the buildings in the square are built in the Italian high-baroque architectural style that gives Odeonsplatz the feel of an Italian square. Now the square has its own U-Bahn station, so it is not only a hub for traffic but a popular meeting place for the citizens of Munich.
- Walk through the stone arches of the Feldherrnhalle, or Field Marshalls’ Hall, one of the most prominent structures on the Odeonsplatz that has many ornate design features and sculptures on its façade.
- Stroll around the beautifully manicured grounds of the Hofgarten whilst in Munich and you will enjoy an Italian-style formal garden that is situated on the east side of the Odeonsplatz.
- Check out the west side of Odeonsplatz to see the Theatinerkirche, a 17th century copper-domed church built in the Italian Baroque style that will make visitors feel as if they’ve left Munich for Italy.
Munich is known throughout the world for its efficient system of public transportation, so getting to the Odeonsplatz is easy without ever using a car. Odeonsplatz has its own U-Bahn station that is a hub for transportation, so all you need to do is alight at the station and you will be there. The Odeonsplatz is one of the central meeting places in Munich and covers a large space, so it is a great place to explore on foot whilst watching people from all over the world. Parking nearby is very limited so it is best to use public transport.
