The National Theatre in Munich has a colourful and illustrious history. First built in 1818, it burned to the ground in 1823. The second theatre lasted until World War II. This third and final theatre has survived to the present day and continues to offer the world- class opera and ballet, which made it so famous. Its graceful neoclassical columns and imposing structure set the mood brilliantly for the entertainment on its stages. Wagner debuted many of his most famous operas at the National Theatre and the tradition continues with subsequent artists to this day.
