The National Theatre in Munich has a colourful and illustrious history. First built in 1818, it burned to the ground in 1823. The second theatre lasted until World War II. This third and final theatre has survived to the present day and continues to offer the world- class opera and ballet, which made it so famous. Its graceful neoclassical columns and imposing structure set the mood brilliantly for the entertainment on its stages. Wagner debuted many of his most famous operas at the National Theatre and the tradition continues with subsequent artists to this day.
- Attend a performance in the 2,100-seat auditorium of either the Bavarian Opera or the Bavarian Ballet, which premiere new works of art each season.
- Take a tour of the National Theatre, in Munich and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the backstage area, the Royal Hall, and even into working there with interviews with stagehands and other workers.
- Enjoy the yearly Munich Opera Festival every July with performances of Wagner, Puccini, and other great composers at the National Theatre.
The National Theatre is on Max-Joseph-Platz 2. Munich has excellent public transportation. If taking the U-bahn, choose the no. 3, 4, 5, or 6 to Odeonsplatz and then walk south. You can ride the S-bahn to Marienplatz and then you'll head north for just five minutes. Buses and trams also take you to the National Theatre. If you don't want to ride public transportation you can always arrange a taxi or limousine to take you to the Opera. There is a car park near the theatre so if you want to hire a car, you can do so with ease.
