If you’re interested in seeing beautiful architecture, historic buildings, art galleries, restaurants, and famous designer shops, all in the same day, visit Maximiliansplatz in Munich, Germany. Maximiliansplatz square was named after Bavarian king Maximilian Joseph and is also known as Max-Joseph-Platz. Maximilianstraße, one of four royal avenues in the city, starts here. The National Theatre, opened in 1818, stands at the east side of the square, which square also features the Residenz Palace and the former Palais Toerring-Jettenbach mansion. In the centre of the square stands a large bronze statue of King Maximilian I, erected in 1835.
- See a ballet or an opera at Maximiliansplatz’s National Theatre, home of the Bayerische Staatsballet (Bavarian State Ballet) and the Bayerische Staatsoper (Bavarian State Opera), and whose impressive auditorium can seat more than 2000 people.
- Stroll down Maximilianstraße in Munich, relax at a sidewalk cafe, and shop (or window shop) at Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Chanel, and several other designer shops.
- Step into Maximilianstraße’s luxurious Munich hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, and enjoy fine dining at its restaurant, and if you splurge for a room, take advantage of the hotel’s limousine service, private shopping, fitness centre, and luxury spa.
Although there is an underground garage beneath Maximiliansplatz, it may be smarter to leave your car outside the city because of heavy traffic and use Munich’s excellent public transportation system to get around. If you are flying into town, you might be tempted to spend some time exploring the airport, one of Europe’s most modern. The city has an excellent tram system, and tram 19 runs through Maximilianstraße. Information on the public transportation system here, including station locations, maps, and schedules, can be obtained at the “public transportation” section of the websitewww.muenchen.de.
