Marienplatz (‘Mary’s Square’) is the historic heart of Munich, with origins that date back to 1158 AD. Today, this centrally located square is a beehive of activity, and the ideal starting point to explore many outstanding attractions in its vicinity. These include the Fischbrunnen (‘Fish Fountain’), a favourite meeting spot for local residents; Feldherrenhalle (home to erstwhile Bavarian Kings); and the massive 22,000 square metre ‘Viktualien Merket’, among others. Every year, millions of visitors head to Marienplatz to see the exquisite architecture of its world-renowned landmarks, unwind in its charming open-air cafes, and indulge to the fullest in its vibrant ambience.
- Watch 32 life-size figurines dance the age-old Schäfflertanz at 11 am, 12 noon and 5 pm, when the world-famous ‘Glockenspiel’ bells chime in the New Town Hall Tower, Marienplatz.
- Get an eyeful of the historic ‘Mariensäule’ (‘Marian Column’) erected in 1638, and crowned by a glistening golden statue of Mother Mary created in 1590.
- Take a toy tour with your tots around the Toy Museum spread over 4 levels in the 55-metre-high tower of the 15th century Old Town Hall, Munich.
Getting to the city and onward to Marienplatz Square is easy. The Munich International Airport, located on the outskirts of the city, is connected by regular flights from most European, German and other world cities. S-Bahn (Suburban trains) and U-Bahn (Underground trains) from the airport take about 40 minutes to reach Hauptbahnhof, the city’s main station near Marienplatz. Local buses and trams ply to all important points in the city. Beige-coloured taxis are available at the airport, designated taxi stands, and all major city streets. Of course, you could always hire a bicycle and pedal to and around the square.
