A bustling, multi-cultural district in the heart of Munich, Ludwigsvorstadt attracts nearly two million visitors each year. Although the face of the district changed following World War II and is now filled with commercial buildings, hotels and top restaurants, Ludwigsvorstadt still contains a number of cultural attractions that make it one of this city’s most popular destinations. The quarter is divided into two districts, St. Paul and Ludwigsvorstadt-Kliniken. Theresienwiese, a large meadow, is home to the area’s famous annual Oktoberfest beer festival. Kaiser-Ludwig-Platz in the St. Paul district is one of the city’s upscale neighbourhoods.
- Enjoy the atmosphere along with world-class beers during Oktoberfest, Munich’s annual fall festival honouring the art of brewing that runs from September to October.
- Head to the north end of Ludwigsvorstadt to the Am Deutschen Museum, located on an island in the Isar River, the largest museum of science and industry in the world.
- Climb the 18-metre high Bavaria, a statue of a female figure dressed in a bearskin, holding a wreath of oak leaves and armed with a sword and the Bavarian coat of arms, to see a magnificent view of Munich.
Ludwigvorstadt is located immediately to the south of Munich’s Hauptbahnhof, which is its main train station. The Ludwigsvorstadt-Kliniken neighbourhood, with its many Turkish restaurants, supermarkets, and general stores is within walking distance. Four U-Bahn lines, U1, U2, U3 and U6 serve the neighbourhood at the Sendlinger Tor interchange. U-Bahn lines u4 and U5 serve the St. Paul north neighbourhood at the Theresienwiese Station, while the U3 and U6 lines stop at Goetheplatz and Poccistraße stations in the south. Tramlines 18 and 19 serve the northern end of the quarter along Bayerstraße.
