If you have a fascination for the arts, you’ll definitely want to visit the Kunstareal, or Art Area, the museum quarter of Munich’s bustling city centre. The Kunstareal was founded in 1816 when the Glyptothek museum was erected, and it now features several other museums, including the Staatliche Antikensammlung, or State Antiques Collection, the Lenbachhaus, the modern art private collection, the Museum Brandhorst, as well as three Pinakotheken galleries, and more. The Alte Pinakothek is one of the world’s oldest art galleries. The area hosting the Kunstareal isn’t very large, making the area continently manageable to navigate on foot—an ideal destination of history and culture for the whole family.
- Visit the Kunstareal’s Alte Pinakothek gallery, home to some of the most famous Old Master paintings, including 800 permanent pieces from the 14th to the 18th centuries, such as works by Raphael and Dürer.
- View the works of Andy Warhol at the Museum Brandhorst, a more recent museum in the Kunstareal, open since 2009 and displaying modern art.
- See the collections of Greek and Roman art at the Glyptothek, the Museum für Abgüsse klassischer Bildwerke, and the Staatliche Artikensammlung, including a collection of antique pottery, and plaster casts of world-famous sculptures.
Munich’s public transportation system is one of the most thorough and punctual in the world, and includes the suburban trains known as the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn, as well as city trams and buses. You can take these trains, a shuttle, or a cab from the Munich International Airport, or rent a car. You can also walk the entire Kunstareal area. Munich is known to have heavy traffic, so you may want to rely on public transportation instead of a cab or rental car.
