The Karlstor is a large city gate that is situated in the southern portion of Old Town Munich, Germany. The structure stands at the western end of the Neuhauser Straße where it divides the historic centre of Ludwigvorstadt. The Karlstor has a long and rich history that dates back to the urban expansion of the city that occurred in the 13th and 14th century. This city gate was first mentioned in the 14th century when it was one of the starting points on the road to Italy. Now it is a major tourist attraction that welcomes visitors to Old Town.
- Visit Munich during Christmas when the Karlstor and the Stachus Square come alive with the Christmas Market, an outdoor market with dazzling lights where you can buy all types of handmade items.
- Stroll beneath the Karlstor into Old Town Munich and you can spend the day exploring the winding cobbled streets and enjoying the cluster of historic structures that dot the area.
- See the two 19th century Gothic towers that were rebuilt on to the gate after the third, and tallest, tower was destroyed by stocks of gunpowder.
Munich is an efficiently run city with a great system of public transportation, so it is not hard to reach without using a car. The easiest way to get there is to use the Munich U-Bahn, and get off at the Karlstor Station that is just a few steps from the gate. There are also several bus routes that go from the city centre to Stachus Square, so you should have no problem reaching Karlstor. Once there it is best to get around on foot as Old Town has plenty to see and do.
