The Hofgarten is a public garden situated in the heart of Munich, Germany. This Italian Renaissance style garden was constructed in the early 17th century by order by Maximilian I. The Hofgarten features a series of well-manicured paths that are flanked by statues and sculptures from different eras. Hofgarten was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt using a combination of elements from a 19th century landscape garden with some of the original formal elements of its 17th century design. Now Hofgarten is one of the prime meeting places in Munich and a popular place for locals to hang out.
- Take the path to the centre of Hofgarten to the pavilion built in 1615 to honour the goddess Diana, one of the most interesting pieces of historical architecture in Munich.
- Check out the arcades in the west and north of Hofgarten and you will find a series of interesting wall paintings that tell the story of the history of Bavaria all the way up to modern Munich.
- Visit the sombre black granite memorial to the White Rose Group, whose members staged a non-violent campaign against Hitler and were eventually executed.
