Hellabrunn Zoo hotels
Situated on the banks of the River Isar in southern Munich, the Hellabrunn Zoo is the world’s first geographical zoo and one of the most bio-diverse in Europe. The zoo first opened in 1911 with a concept that animals should be grouped by geographic region rather than by species. Although it took part in some controversial breeding practices, Hellabrunn Zoo’s design quickly earned it praise from animal lovers around the world. Now, the Hellabrunn Zoo is highly active in the conservation of animals and is one of the most popular zoos in Germany.
- Check out the Elephant House at the Hellabrunn Zoo, an attraction built in 1914 and is considered one of the oldest elephant houses in the world and a popular place to see these gentle giants.
- Get a thrill, or chill, at the Munich zoo’s Villa Dracula, where free-flying bats flutter about visitors’ heads, and view the bats’ sleeping quarters using infrared camera.
- Watch the piranha feeding at the Aquarium to see these fierce creatures take apart prey in a matter of seconds, as well as see the rattlesnakes, mambas, and vipers populating the terrariums on the ground floor.
There are two parking lots at the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich, although visitors are encouraged to take public transport as space is limited. Visitors can take the U-Bahn line U3 and get off at the Thalkirchen station, which is just a short walk away from the Hellabrunn Zoo. The subway ride is less than 10 minutes from Marienplatz. Visitors can also take Bus 52 from Marienplatz to the Tierpark (Zoo) stop at Alemannenstrasse, which is near the zoo’s “Flamingo Entrance.” For visitors with cars, there are convenient car-parks located at various metro and suburban railway stations in Munich.
