One of Munich’s nicest and most expensive residential areas is Harlaching, located on the city’s 18th borough on the far southside. Once an outlying village, Harlaching is bordered on the west by the River Isar and to the south by the Grünwald and Perlacher Forest. This borough is known for expansive green spaces with up to 25% of local land devoted to parks. Many of Munich’s wealthiest citizens live here, with the most prestigious properties located close to the river. Harlaching is also a popular weekend destination for locals who want to hike and take long bicycle rides.
- Make a pilgrimage to Harlaching’s thirteenth century St. Anna Church with its Rococo style vaulted ceiling and numerous frescoes that prominently depict the Virgin Mary in various stages of her life.
- Watch one of the world’s most famous football teams, FCBayern, work out in their training facility or visit Munich’s most traditional football facility, Grünwalder Stadion to experience the intensity of Germany’s favourite sport.
- Relax in open areas like Tierpark, Munich’s Zoo, take a stroll along the river or have a meal in beer gardens such as Menterschwaige and Harlachinger Einkehr that are surrounded by old trees providing a welcome respite from summer sun.
Munich’s extensive public transportation system makes reaching Harlaching easy. U-bahn lines 3 and 6 travel through the borough, while S-Bahn lines S7, S20 and S24also stop in Harlaching. Several bus lines also run through the area include one that runs directly from Marienplatz in the city centre to the Tierpark. Easy connections allow visitors to reach this area from Munich’s Hauptbahnhof via other public transportation methods, and to connect to other areas in Germany as well as throughout Europe.
