The Glyptothek is a museum in Munich, Germany, that was built to bring ancient Greek and Roman culture to the country. Bavarian King Ludwig I wanted to build the museum to showcase his large personal collection of sculpture and artefacts from ancient Greece and Rome. The Neoclassical museum was built between 1816 and 1830 from a design by Leo von Klenze. The Glyptothek features artwork dating from 650 BC to 550 AD and includes some of the most important Greek and Roman antiquities in the world, some of which are contained in niches around the museum’s ornate façade.
- Get transported from modern Munich to archaic Greece on a visit to the Archaic Collection in the Glyptothek, an exhibit that features famous works like the Munich Kouros and Kouros of Tenea.
- See the classical age of Greece come alive and explore the Classical Period exhibit that displays such masterworks as the Portrait of Homer and the Medusa Rondanini.
- Admire the large collection of Roman busts kept at the Glyptothek in Munich and you will be treated to detailed sculptures of Emperors Augustus and Septimius Severus.
Munich features an efficient and dense system of public transportation that makes it easy to get to the Glyptothek from just about anywhere in the city. The easiest way to get there is to use the U-Bahn and get off at the Königsplatz station that is just a short walk away from the Glyptothek. There are also tram lines and buses that go near the museum. Cycling is an immensely popular activity in Munich and you will find plenty of dedicated bike trails to use to get to the Glyptothek, as well as ample bike parking outside.
