Beer and Munich are synonymous and one of the best places to sample world-famous brews is in the southern Munich district of Giesing. Largely a residential district, this neighbourhood comes alive during the beer festivals held here, the world-famous Oktoberfest that begins in late September, and the Starkbierfest that occurs in the spring. Located about 3 km south from the city centre and across the River Isar, the quiet Giesing neighbourhood has a number of large parks and recreational areas and is a welcome alternative from the bustle of Munich’s Aldstadt.
