Alter Hof hotels
The Alter Hof (also known as the Old Court) is situated at the centre of Munich, Germany where it has been since at least the 12th century. Alter Hof is made up of five different wings and was once the residence of Louis IV, the Holy Roman Emperor. The structure has undergone many changes and renovations over the years and has also been owned by several different families, so it has interesting design features from several different eras, making it one of the most historically important and architecturally interesting structures in the city.
- Check out the late Gothic west wings of the Burgstock section of Alter Hof and marvel at one of the best-preserved parts of the structure, including the tower that is one of the symbols of Munich.
- Explore the Mint Yard, with its renaissance arcades that were designed by Munich architect Wilhelm Egkl in 1563 and then redesigned with neo-classical elements in the 19th century.
- Go to the south side of the courtyard and see the famous neo-gothic bay window known as the Monkey Tower because of a myth involving Ludwig the Barbarian and an excited primate.
Munich features a system of efficient public transportation that makes it easy to get to Alter Hof without using a car. The easiest way to get there is to use line 3 or line 6 of the city’s U-Bahn or S-Bahn and get off at the Marienplatz station. Then it is just a short walk down Altenhof Strasse to the fascinating building. Munich is also a very green city so many people choose to reduce their carbon footprint by getting around by bike. There are many paths that lead to Alter Hof, so cyclists can leave the car at home.
