The Karlsruhe Rundown
The unique and cultured city of Karlsruhe, located in the south of Germany near the border of France, is not afraid to kick up its heels when the mood strikes. From the central hub of its radially designed city street network fans to its outlying regions, Karlsruhe bulges with attractions both historic and culturally artistic. The central point is the Baroque Palace and Gardens, a magnificent structure that reflects the opulence that this city has become famous for. The history of Karlsruhe is evident in the many museums that dot the city, but it’s the cultural events and festivals that add a modern and dynamic flavour.
Seated on the boundary of the Black Forest, Karlsruhe is both a natural wonderland and an intellectual paradise, offering several Arts Festivals during the course of the year, including Das Fest, an open-air music festival and the annual European Culture Festival. For the serial shopper, the Kaiserstrasse offers a wide range of designer and gift items. If you love the nightlife, there’s a good selection of pubs, clubs and restaurants that open till the small hours. Karlsruhe is a hub of culture and fun, and an exciting family holiday option.

Karlsruhe General Information
If Karlsruhe gets a perpetual pass from tourists to the Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, Alsace and Lorraine, it must have more to do with the plethora of excellent destinations nearby in both Germany and France and less to do with the city of 300,000 people. The truth is that Karlsruhe is superb but indeed, has to compete with the likes of Stuttgart, Baden-Baden, Calw, Heidelberg, Freiburg im Breisgau and Strasbourg, France for attention.
The incomparable Karlsruhe Schloss is the obvious place to start in the city. The rest of Karlsruhe in fact, was built around the magnificent palace from the early 18th century on. A venerable museum today, visitors can tour the spectacular palace and prolific schlossgarten for free on Friday afternoons. Other pulse points in the fine city include the handsome Marktplatz, Staatliche Kunsthalle (State Art Gallery), and Kleine Kirche (Little Church). The Botanischer Garten Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Botanical Garden) is a good place for a contemplative afternoon stroll and on the other side of the spectrum, Das Fest and Schloss in Flammen lure big, boisterous crowds to the city.
