Located in the Port of Hamburg, Speicherstadt is the historic warehouse district of the city and the largest timber-pile founded warehouse district in the world. Andreas Meyer originally designed the Neo-Gothic red brick outer layer of Speicherstadt, with its alcoves, glazed terra cotta ornaments and little towers. The iconic buildings are still used as warehouses and are also home to several museums that celebrate the rich history of the area. The canals that are surrounded by the impressive façade make a hidden world that can only be truly appreciated from sky or boat. The Speicherstadt is within a customs-free zone where a visitor can stroll around unrestricted gazing at exotic items being loaded and coffee and spices wafting on the breeze.
- Discover the International Maritime Museum housed in the oldest warehouse of Speicherstadt where the historical Hamburg sea trade unravelled.
- Take the interactive tour of the Hamburg Dungeon, which leads visitors through the dark history of the city including torture chambers and a terrifying journey through the Great Fire of Hamburg.
- See authentic aspects of traditional Afghan culture come to life at the Afghan Museum.
The best way to see the inner canals and structures of Speicherstadt is by the boat tours, which leave from St. Pauli Landungsbrucken in Hamburg many times a day. Since boats can only reach Speicherstadt during high tide visitors must time it just right and make arrangements prior to departure. Those taking the metro should get off at the Messburg stop that is just a short distance away and then walk across the Kornhausbrucke or Jungfernbrucke bridge. The beautiful brick facades of the buildings can best be appreciated by walking along the periphery of the grounds.
