What is known in Germany as the “sinful mile”, the Reeperbahn is the centre of nightlife in the St. Pauli red-light district of Hamburg. While some come for the sin, others visit the Reeperbahn just for the sites, which include sex-shops, strip clubs, restaurants, discotheques and even a sex museum. The area is famous for being the location of the Beatles’ early career and a monument called the Beatles-Platz has been erected in their honour. Because of the weapons ban and rise of discotheques, the Reeperbahn is becoming safer and cleaner, much to the chagrin of some of its residents.
- Visit the Davidwache, Reeperbahn’s iconic police station, which is also on the same street where legal prostitutes dance seductively behind walls of glass in one of the enduring traditions of Hamburg.
- Head to the Safari Club for adult entertainment that includes shows that might make some people blush, or instead, head to the nearby Catholic Church, where you might decide to move to Hamburg permanently.
- Get away from the sleazy entertainment of Reeperbahn for a few minutes and catch some musical theatre at the Operettenhaus, which often has popular shows like Cats and Mama Mia!
A trip to Hamburg would not be complete without a visit to the Reeperbahn, so luckily getting there is no problem. People can take the metro and get off at the St. Pauli or the Reeperbahn stop and then simply follow the noise and excitement. Once there it is safe enough to walk around, although people should not get too distracted by the bright lights and sites as there are pickpockets and other small criminals lurking about. Any taxi in the city will know the fastest route to the Reeperbahn.
