Ottensen is a quarter of Hamburg, Germany, that is located in the Altona borough on the right bank of the Elbe River. Ottensen was first settled in the 14th century, when it was largely a community of farmers. In the 19th century, it was annexed to Prussia before once again becoming part of Hamburg during the 1930s. Since then, Ottensen has evolved into a quiet quarter of the city with many pedestrian friendly zones, art galleries, theatres, and green spaces that make it a great place to spend a quiet afternoon in Hamburg.
- Learn about the history and culture of Hamburg and northern Germany at the Altonaer Museum Norddeutsches Landesmuseum, a sprawling, four-branch complex that celebrates the art and culture of the area.
- Watch a play at the Altonaer Theatre, a 19th century venue that regularly hosts popular dramas and musicals in both German and English.
- Join thousands of enthusiastic supporters at an exciting FC Teutonia Ottensen football match and enjoy one of the most popular teams in Hamburg.
Hamburg enjoys the same efficient and inexpensive public transportation that is famous throughout Germany, and Ottensen is well connected to the city centre by many modes. The rapid transit system of the city train has several stops in Ottensen and is the quickest way to reach the quarter. Cycling and walking are extremely popular in Hamburg, and Ottensen features many areas that are closed to traffic, making it perfect to get around on bicycle or on foot. This can make parking tough to find, so those with cars should leave them in Hamburg and enjoy Ottensen on foot.
