Opera House hotels
More than 325 years ago, the first opera house was founded in Hamburg, Germany. Anyone who paid the entrance fee was welcomed, contrary to other cities' policies that only nobility could attend operatic performances. From its founding, the stage equipment at the Hamburg Opera House was very innovative. The Opera House went through a series of changes through the decades, including a series of name changes. Earlier, it was financially supported by the citizens of the city and opera patrons, but is now supported by the city senate. The current opera house was built in 1955.
- Visit the Hamburg Port, founded in the 12th century and located along the Elbe River, to enjoy a stroll down the pier to observe the cruise ships and massive container ships.
- Take the elevator to the viewing platform at the top of the 147.3-metre spire of the nearby Nikolai Kirche, all that is left of the beautiful Gothic church built in 1847, for spectacular views of the city and Hamburg Opera House.
- Visit the Hamburg Museum, situated close to the underground St. Pauli station, to get a better insight of the history of the Opera House.
There is an excellent public transport system in place in Hamburg, with buses running through the night and catering for patrons of the Opera House. All routes depart and arrive at the Rathausmarkt. Alternatively, the underground and over ground Intracity train service gives travellers easy access to the Opera House, but only run from 5am to 1am. The city has 5 major train stations from which the high speed trains of the Inter City Express serve most major German cities on an hourly basis. Cycling is popular in the city, and there are plenty of available taxis.
