The district of Neustadt (New Town) is located at the mouth of Alster River, between St. Pauli and Hamburg- Altstadt. Although known as the old town of Hamburg, Neustadt is actually the more modern section of city. The location underwent a huge housing construction boom during the time of the Nazi reign, and the district has a lot to offer visitors as it is home to landmarks like the Martin Hall, Laeiszhalle. Aside from these relatively old landmarks, the district boasts modern attractions like The Neustadt Centre, and the high-tech canal that runs between the Alster Lake and Elbe.
- Visit one of the leading opera companies not only in Hamburg but in the entire country; the Hamburg State Opera, which was established in 1678, and is the first public opera house in Germany.
- Spend some time exploring the Michaeliskirche Church, locally called Michel, which is the most popular church in Hamburg and the biggest Baroque-style church found In North Germany.
- Wend your way from Neustadt to the St. Pauli quarter, near the city’s port jetties to marvel at the famous Bismarck Monument, a statue dedicated to Otto von Bismarck, the statesman responsible for Germany's unification.
The Neustadt District is accessible by Hamburg’s public transport, and is served by the rapid transit underground system called U-Bahn and the regional rail network called S-Bahn. These train services also run all night, and are the ideal choice to avoid heavy traffic. The nearest S-Bahn and U-Bahn station to the district is the Jungfernstieg Station, which serves the S1, S2, S3 lines, and the U1 and U2 lines. From this station, the Neustadt is only a 2-5 minute walk away. As an alternative, there is also a dependable network of metro buses that regularly go through this locality.
