If you’d like to experience shopping, good food, interesting buildings, or see a movie in central Hamburg, you’ll want to visit Mönckebergstraße (Mönckeberg Street), one of Hamburg’s main shopping areas. The street has existed since 1909, making it the oldest traditional shopping district in the city, and now sees traffic of around 12,000 pedestrians per hour, making it the second busiest shopping street in all of Germany. Most stores on Mönckebergstraße are open from 10 AM to 10 PM, and restaurants stay open later. The street features department stores, designer boutiques, and smaller retail stores.
- Check out Mönckebergstraße’s fashion shops C&A, Peek & Cloppenburg, and Anson’s, for men, or visit Saturn, a very large electronics store, or Gold Kraemer for jewellery, on your Hamburg holiday.
- Walk along Mönckebergstraße under the almost 70 trees and see many architecturally interesting and historical buildings, including the Dished House, the Rappolthaus, the Grell House, Mönckebergbrunnen Hall, and the Hulbehaus.
- See a film at the Passage Kino (Cinema), one of the oldest cinemas in Germany that has been continuously open, and the oldest cinema in Hamburg, open since 1912 and attracting 150,000 viewers per year.
The U and S Bahns to Hamburg's Hauptbahnhof (Central Train Station) and Jungfernstieg stops will take you to your destination, or take one of several city buses. There is also an underground station for the U-Bahn on Mönckebergstraße. If you are driving a rented vehicle, there are three parking garages on Mönckebergstraße: the Gertrudentor lot has 1.900 parking spaces, the Saturn lot has 334 parking spaces, and the Karstadt lot has 300 spaces. The street, itself, is pedestrian-friendly, and only allows buses, taxis and delivery trucks to drive on the street.
