St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg is known by locals simply as “Michel.” Michel is difficult to miss, as its copper-covered spire extends 132 metres into the Hamburg sky. The most famous of Hamburg’s churches, Michel’s architecture has been replicated in nine different cities. Visitors come to Hamburg to see Michel’s original design, with its richly appointed interior, intricate carvings and elaborate gold work. Michel has no parking next to the church, although there is an out-garage with an entrance on Rödingsmarkt and SchaarsteinwegNeustadt. As in most German cities, however, Hamburg has many good public transportation options, including bus, train and subway. To travel by train take the S3 or S1 line and stop at Stadthausbrücke, which exits on Michaelisstraße. To travel by subway use line U3, which stops at the Rödingsmarkt, BaumwallandSt. Pauli stop that are near Michel. If you are visiting in warmer months, bicycle from your hotel alongside the locals.
