Hailed as the largest town-planning project in Europe, Hamburg’s HafenCity has been built on artificially elevated plinths, eight metres above sea level. This new quarter of Germany’s beautiful harbour town has been designed as a bustling hub to accommodate businesses, retail shops, restaurants, cafes, and residential zones, and is a popular location for locals and tourists alike to discover. The waterside squares and promenades of HafenCity are alive with activity, from temporary thematic displays to annual festivals, and the range of shopping and nightlife possibilities ensure something pleasantly exciting for everyone.
- Learn local history at the multitude of museums in the gothic Speiecherstadt, including the Deutsches Zollmuseum (German Customs Museum) and the Hamburg Dungeon, a journey through Hamburg’s dark history.
- The nautically inclined should head to the Port of Hamburg in HafenCity for views of visiting ocean liners, and then on to the Maritime Museum for the vast display of model ships.
- Catch burgeoning culture in action at the grandiose Elbphilharmonie (Elba Philharmonic Hall), HafenCity’s jewel in the crown which, though currently still under construction, attracts many visitors each day.
Hamburg International Airport is a mere 9.5 kilometres from HafenCity, and is conveniently connected to the city by the Hamburg public transport network, which runs trains on the S-Bahn line to the city centre every ten minutes. The U1 and U3 lines run directly from there to HafenCity. If you would prefer the bus, Metrobus numbers 3, 4, and 6 run frequently into the district. For visitors who wish to see more of the outlying regions, car hire is available from the airport and at many locations in the city.
