If you’re interested in German history, specifically World War II, the urban quarter of Fuhlsbüttel in northern Hamburg is a noteworthy place to see. In March 1933, three months after Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany, the prison that had been in Fuhlsbüttel since 1879 was turned into a sub camp of the Nazi concentration camp Neuengamme. The Gestapo took over the camp in 1936, and called it Polizeigefängnis or police prison. By the time the camp was liberated in 1945, 250 people had died there, a fact that is now commemorated at the Fuhlsbüttel Concentration Camp and Prison Memorial.
- Visit the Fuhlsbüttel Concentration Camp and Prison Memorial, open Sundays, 10 AM to 5 PM, with free admission and featuring a plaque listing the camp’s victims and an exhibition about the camp’s history, including a reconstructed solitary cell.
- If you left the kids at the hotel while visiting the Fuhlsbüttel Memorial, make up for it by taking them on an outing to Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg -- the world’s largest model train exhibit.
- Walk along the water at Hafen Hamburg (Port Hamburg) and enjoy the impressive buildings, watch ships docking, and visit waterfront shops.
